5 Ways to Support Baltimore Black-Owned Businesses During Black Business Month

August is Black Business Month, an ideal time to support the diverse Black-owned businesses that contribute to Baltimore’s vibrant economy. Here are five impactful ways you can show your support:

  1. Explore Local Business Directories Start your journey by visiting madeinbaltimore.org to explore their member directory, where you can customize your search to discover Black-owned businesses. You can also check out other valuable resources like CLLCTIVLY’s directory, the Greater Baltimore Black Chamber of Commerce’s directory, or the Mayor’s Office of Small and Minority Business Advocacy & Development directory. These platforms are rich with options, offering you a variety of ways to support Black-owned businesses in the community.
  2. Shop at the Made in Baltimore Store For a hands-on shopping experience, visit the Made in Baltimore store at Harbor Point, where you can find products from a wide array of local Black-owned businesses. While you're there, don't forget to stop by the BOOST Boutique, a partner of Downtown Baltimore, co-located within the Harborplace Pavilion. This boutique is another fantastic spot to discover and support Black entrepreneurs.
  3. Share on Social Media After making your purchases, share your finds on social media and tag the businesses. This small gesture can go a long way in helping these businesses reach new customers. Your post might inspire others to explore and support the same businesses, creating a ripple effect of community support.
  4. Leave Positive Reviews Leaving a positive review on platforms like Google, Yelp, and social media can significantly impact a small business. Your feedback helps boost the business’s online presence and reputation, making it easier for potential customers to find and trust them.
  5. Attend Events and Workshops Many Black-owned businesses in Baltimore host events and workshops. By attending these, you’re not only supporting the business financially but also engaging with the community and learning more about the unique offerings and stories behind each business.

Why Buying Local Makes an Impact

Supporting local businesses, particularly Black-owned businesses, has a significant and positive impact on the community. Consider these stats:

  • Economic Impact: The American Independent Business Alliance reports that for every $100 spent at a local business, $48 remains in the local economy, compared to just $14 when spent at a national chain.
  • Job Creation: Small businesses are the backbone of job creation, responsible for 64% of new jobs in the U.S.
  • Community Investment: Local businesses are often more invested in their communities, frequently supporting local causes, sponsoring events, and contributing to community projects.

By supporting Black-owned businesses in Baltimore, especially during Black Business Month, you're not only empowering entrepreneurs but also strengthening the local economy and fostering a more vibrant, inclusive community. Let’s make this month a celebration of all that these businesses bring to our city.
